SPIRITUAL SUNDAY, THE CHOCOLATE CHURCH

 THE CHOCOLATE CHURCH IN BATH, MAINE

When we were in Maine we took a day trip to the lovely town of Bath.

As we were coming into town we kind of got lost.  The very first thing we saw was a huge church in the striking color of chocolate brown. We found our way downtown and enjoyed a lovely day in Bath.  When we started home it wasn't hard to spot the strange colored church and Bill took me there to take photos. This is a TALL church and very old.  I had a hard time getting a good photo.

It needed a paint job and I couldn't help wondering why someone would paint a church chocolate.

 

 

 

I have to tell you the very chocolate color of the paint does not show in my photos.

The Chocolate Church was originally built in 1847 and it was called the Central Church.  The style is Gothic Revival.

The Central Church ranks as one of the most high style examples of wooden ecclesiastical architecture in Maine. It enjoys national significance as well for being a well preserved representative example of its building type and as an early work of Arthur Gilman. 

Gilman created a church which stands on a Granite foundation and measures 47 feet wide by 88 feet long with a tower 18 feet square. This stately square tower forms the main entrance to a two and a half story wooden church with a large gable roofed sanctuary. The exterior is sheathed with board and batten and displays such Gothic features as buttressing, pointed arch windows and pinnacles. Perhaps the most pleasing exterior element is a small vestibule which projects from the north wall of the church. Its gable roof is ornamented with intricately carved bargeboards, and its door has large medieval hinges.

The Gothic interior of the Central Church matches the impressive qualities of its exterior. 

The Central Church is a 19th century monument in the midst of one of Maine’s most well preserved cities.

Sadly, this beautiful Gothic church is being used as an Art Center

At least the Chocolate Church is preserved and being used for the Arts.

I have to say, it is stunning in it's Gothic design.

CELEBRATIONS

July 22nd is our daughter's birthday.  Since we post early I am posting her special day on the 22nd.

She is 46 years old and  she and her hubby celebrated 25 years of marriage last month.

They are the parents of two amazing children who are 16 and 14 years old.

We are so very proud of you and your wonderful family.

This cake is for you Diana.

VINTAGE THINGIE THURSDAY - A NESTING HEN TREASURE

BLUEBIRD ANTIQUES HAD A SALE.

Many of you know my youngest sisters are in the antique business in Atlanta, Georgia.  They cleaned our their shop of the many items that didn't sell in a certain length of time and came to an antique flea market not too far from where I live to have a sale.

Let me tell ya, we had a crowd of family and friends that could not wait to see what bargains we might buy.  I bought a few things but I am sharing just one special purchase that I love to pieces.

THE SWEETEST NESTNG HEN CANNISTER

I have a collecton of hens and roosters and this one is not only charming, it is useful.  It was half price.  Oh joy, I was doing the happy dance.

It could be from the 50's but I forgot to ask how old it is.  It darn sure is not from CHINA.

It is sitting on my kitchen counter waiting for me to put something tasty in it, like homemade cookies.

OUTDOOR WEDNESDAY - THE HOMES OF COASTAL MAINE

BEAUTIFUL HOMES IN COASTAL MAINE

We were so impressed with the beautiful homes where we stayed in Maine.  They were all considered cottages no matter how big they were.

Summering in Maine was a very popular place with the 'Elite.'  Bar Harbor, Seal Harbor, Northeast Harbor and all around the beautiful Acadia National Park you will find these stunning and somtimes quaint homes.

The photos of the homes on the water, were taken from a boat ride to the Cranberry Islands.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

There are so many beautiful homes in Maine that I didn't capture in a photo.

I suggest a vacation in Maine in the Acadia Natinal Park area.

GOODWILL BARGAIN

Stopped in to my favorite bargain store and found some wine bottles that were a real bargain.

Pretty colors and shapes for two dollars each.

I can't date them but a tag said Pier One.

I put them in my kitchen window.  I think they would be an attractive center piece with fresh flowers in them.  Just thinkin.

 

 

The light from the window made this a difficult task to get a good photo.

The first thing I noticed was a charming sitting area for the husbands.

A brilliant idea.

Coastal charm at it's best.

This table setting would make all the tablescape Bloggers drool.

This part of the store would definitely require a sitting area for our spouses. Just ask my husband!
