HAND CROCHETED HOT PADS
My DIL collects these charming hot pads and uses them for coasters. They work perfectly and look awesome in her 1930's home.
I gave her the red and white basket and the bloomers. I found them for a $1 years ago and gave them to her for her collection.
I always wondered how these little thin hot pads could be of service in a kitchen. Maybe back then they collcted them too because they are so cute.

This has been my treasure for 50 plus years. I bought this in 1960 before I married my husband. The angel fell off and she somehow was glued back on at an angle. It makes me smile every time I see her like she is taking flight.
It is always in a special place in our home at Christmas.

I stay home and eat Sour Cream Raisin pie
My pie is a family tradition and so easy.
My grandmother's recipe
1 cup raisins
1 cup sour cream
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 pinch of salt
double crust
350 degrees 40 - 45 minutes.
The crust will be 'barely' browned. DO NOT OVERBAKE

Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving in the United States, which is the beginning of the traditional Christmas shopping season. The term dates back to at least 1966, although its usage was primarily on the East coast. The term has become more common in other parts of the country since 2000. Because Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday in November in the United States, Black Friday occurs between the 22nd and the 29th of November.
Black Friday is not an official holiday, but many employees have the day off (with the exceptions of those employed in retailing, health care, and banking), which increases the number of potential shoppers. Retailers often decorate for the Christmas and holiday season weeks beforehand. Many retailers open extremely early, with most of the retailers typically opening at 5AM or even earlier. Some of the larger retailers (depending on the location) such as Sears, Best Buy, Macy's, Toys "R" Us, and Walmart have been reported to open as early as midnight on the start of Black Friday in localized areas and remain open for 24 hours throughout the day until midnight the following Saturday. Upon opening, retailers offer doorbuster deals and loss leaders to draw people to their stores. Although Black Friday, as the first shopping day after Thanksgiving, has served as the unofficial beginning of the Christmas season at least since the start of the modern Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1924, the term "Black Friday" has been traced back only to the 1960s.
The term "Black Friday" originated in Philadelphia in reference to the heavy traffic on that day (see Origin of the name "Black Friday" below). More recently, merchants and the media have used it instead to refer to the beginning of the period in which retailers go from being in the red (i.e., posting a loss on the books) to being in the black (i.e., turning a profit).

Go ahead tell me...do you shop like crazy on Black Friday? At this very moment my daughter and her kids are plotting their route for the biggest shopping day of the year.
NOT ME....I do not do this kind of shopping. I guess there is some kind of high when you find items on sale and get a good start on your Christmas shopping list.

MY FAMILY THANKSGIVING
The year 1997
This is a day I share each Thanksgiving because I love revisiting that special Thanksgiving so much.
Thankfulness is...This gathering of a family who loves each other dearly.
WE ARE SO BLESSED

This post is all about our family reunion for thanksgiving 1997. It wasn't an ordinary reunion, I will let you see for yourself. We had 85 family members attending this very special Thanksgiving.
The local newspapers heard of our huge family gathering (probably by my sister Carmen who has lived in Franklin a long time) and came out to this huge complex we rented for the week and asked to take our pictures. We were thrilled of course. We donned our pilgrim and Indian clothing and posed for the papers.
Can you see me standing next to my son John on the far right. I confess those clothes were not at all the most flattering to ones figure. (Newspaper article above)
Have you guessed yet? We all wore pilgrim clothing or Indian clothing. Our ancestor John Coulter was in the Louis and Clark Expedition and is in the encyclopedia as the first white man to discover Yellowstone National Park. My maiden name is Sylva Jeanne Coulter. That is another story. Now for the pilgrims and Indians attending this special Thanksgiving dinner.

Do you remember Aunt Shirley? She lives in the blue Victorian house posted on blue Mon. a few weeks back. Here she is with her dh Uncle Bill. She never misses a family gathering.
Well there were more but I shared my sisters and brother only. (except Aunt Shirley) We were so blessed to be together that special Thanksgiving.
Some nieces and a nephew are missing from these photos. They were probably somewhere thanking the Lord for getting away from the chaos. All these photos were taken by my dh and families were gathered all around waiting their turn. To say it was loud and crazy is an understatement. LOL. dinner would not be served until these photos were taken. Not a popular concept. After the photos were finished, 85 hungry pilgrims and Indians sat down in a huge dining room and shared their blessings and thankfulness for being together on this happiest of Thanksgiving celebrations. The food was prepared by everyone's loving hands. The tables were decorated with turkey pine cones made by all the children. We gathered together with happy hearts and thanking God we all had food at last!!!

BUTTON PINS
These button pins were made by my mother's sister when she was in her eighty's. She always loved to keep herself busy. She passed away at age 92 this past year. I was cleaning my jewelry boxes and organizing everything when I came across these darling pins made out of buttons. They were forgotten and in a box I haven't looked at for years. I have never worn them. Now I am so happy to have these darling pins as a memory of an Aunt that I loved dearly. Her name was Sylva Lorite and many of you probaly do not know that my first name is Sylva Jeanne. Sylva was also my grandmother's name. Ths name Sylva is a family name that is still alive and well I have a 2nd cousin that is also named Sylva Jeanne. I feel a strong connection to my family and Aunt Sylva Lorite will always be a special memory because we share the same first name as well as her sweet button pins.
I especially love the one with the daisies in the center.

Christmas 2011 - The Birth of a New Tradition!
As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods and merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American jobs
Yet this year can be different.
This year Americans can give the gift of genuine concern for others. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands.
WHAT ABOUT HOME MADE GOODIES FROM YOUR VERY OWN KITCHEN?
Layer ingredients in jar in order given. Press each layer firmly in place before adding next ingredient.
Empty cookie mix in large mixing bowl; stir to combine. Add 3/4 cup softened butter, 1 egg slightly beaten and 1 teaspoon vanilla; mix until completely blended. Roll heaping tablespoonfuls into balls. Place 2 inches apart on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350º for 11 to 13 minutes until edges are lightly browned. Cool 5 minutes on cookie sheet; remove to wire racks to cool completely. Yield: 3 dozen.
THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX
Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper?
EVERYONE gets their hair cut, so how about gift certificates from your local hair salon or barber?
Gym membership? It's appropriate for all ages who are thinking about health improvement.
Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed? Local car wash shops would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates that will last for months.
Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plonking down the Benjamines on a Chinese made flat-screen TV? Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would prefer his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or lessons at the local golf course instead.
There are a tons of restaurants offering gift certificates. And, if your preference isn't the fancy eatery, what about a half dozen breakfast gift cards at the local IHOP?
This is about supporting your home town -- Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep the doors of their businesses open.
How many people could use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by our neighbors? How about pest control services? Get the point?
Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? How about the services of a local cleaning lady for a day.
Planning a holiday dinner? How about going to a local restaurant with the family, and leaving your server a nice tip. It will be nice to leave the cooking to others, so that we can have a good time.
And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theater? Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands.
Honestly, do we REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese lights for the lawn during the holidays? If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip to show your appreciation for their help all year long.
Christmas is no longer about draining our pockets so that China can build another glittering city. Christmas is about caring for us, and encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams.
When we care about others, we care about our communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn't imagine.
So, donate to your church until it hurts, feed the homeless, or start any other tradition of giving during Christmas, but let's keep it going throughout the entire year, for we are blessed.
Let's make every festive occasion an opportunity for caring the American way.
