Beverly at, How Sweet the Sound, is our host for Pink Saturday. Please visit her blog for more Pinkies than you can imagine.
Good morning my dear Pinkies..If you haven't seen much of me and you wonder if I am MIA. I'm not. My oldest daughter Andrea, is here recovering from shoulder surgery. She is doing well considering she completely tore her rotator cuff.
She fell when trying to find a new patient's home in one of the worst winters Tennessee has experienced in a long time. She waited a long time to have this surgery because she was concerned for her patients. The doctor said the repair is iffy and she needs a real break for a change. She is a Hospice nurse and on call much of the time. For a real rest she needed to get away from her job. Lucky us, we never get to see her very much at all. She lives in Knoxville, TN.
Andrea is am LPN and is a field nurse for Hospice. Her experience spans 25 years. She handles case management, assesses the state of the patient's illness and which involves pain management, comfort care, and end of life care. She is part of a team that includes a chaplain, Social workers and CNA's for hands on personal care in a patients home.
A bit of info about Hospice
- Hospice is a special concept of care designed to provide comfort and support to patients and their families when a life-limiting illness no longer responds to cure-oriented treatments.
- Hospice care neither prolongs life nor hastens death. Hospice staff and volunteers offer a specialized knowledge of medical care, including pain management.
- The goal of hospice care is to improve the quality of a patient's last days by offering comfort and dignity.
- Hospice care is provided by a team-oriented group of specially trained professionals, volunteers and family members.
- Hospice addresses all symptoms of a disease, with a special emphasis on controlling a patient's pain and discomfort.
- Hospice deals with the emotional, social and spiritual impact of the disease on the patient and the patient's family and friends.
- Hospice offers a variety of bereavement and counseling services to families before and after a patient's death.
It would be a blessing if we never need this service. If I did need this service, I would wish to have someone like my daughter to be my home Hospice nurse.
Thank you Andrea for doing a job many of us could not handle. No wonder your patients love you...You care.
Love you, Mom and Dad
Happy Pink Saturday...
this is a wonderful tribute to your daughter and the work of Hospice which is so important to families that are facing the loss of a loved one...not to mention the care and comfort for that loved one...
take care Andrea...praying for a total healing for you.

Happy Pink Saturday to you and Andrea, Jeanne. You know I have loved her for many years.
One of my close friends is director of Hospice for the health system where I work. She is also a nurse, and she treasures the wonderful caregivers that work with her. It takes a very special person to be a nurse, and an even more special person to be a Hospice nurse. Andrea has a compassionate and empathetic heart. I know that her patients and families adore her.
We all adore you, Andrea.

How wonderful for your daughter's patients to have experienced her caring and love! We have a friend who recently passed away with pancreatic cancer and his last days were greatly improved by caring Hospice care givers!
Thank you Andrea!
Have a beautiful weekend enjoying each other!

My Sis and I will be eternally grateful for the wonderful staff who made our Dad's last days comfortable and pleasant---they came to seem like family, and we'll always remember them in our hearts.
This is a great and noble calling, and it seems that only Special Angels need apply---they're really a blessing to their patients and their families. Hope your Dear Girl is all well soon!!

I could never do this type work. It is a blessing that there are people that can. My sister is a registered nurse at a Hospice place and handles it very well. Best wishes to this special lady and the work she does.

Hi Jeanne! You have one terrific daughter!! To be a hospice nurse is truly a special gift and calling. My experience with hospice has been limited, but I clearly recall the day I spent with two wonderful ladies who were explaining to me and our family about the roll that Hospice was about to play in the life of my/our lives while they helped with our Mom's care. They were truly caring professionals.
YOU surprised the dickens out of me with that sweet birthday mention on your post!! Thank you for your kind wishes...I had a wonderful day with Bonnie and Marian in Parkville and an awesome evening with my family!! I am birthdayed OUT, but in a great way!!!
Hope you've had a terrific Pink Saturday.....Love you!! dana

Hi Sweet Jeanne!
The Hospice gal who was with me when my Mom died was precious. What a comfort to me at such a difficult time. Since then I have often thought that if I had to do some sort of work outside my home, I would like to be involved with Hospice in some way. I know your daughter is wonderful serving in that capacity with them.
The fruit doesn't fall too far from the tree, you know?? {smile}
Love you sweetie! Have a blessed Sunday!
Big Hugs,
Becky

Hi, Jeanne! Gosh... tears in my eyes in this loving portrait of your daughter, a nurse. And what a job she does! To be a hospice nurse is a kind of calling, I think. Bless Andre for what she does for so many. Do hope she will make a good recovery from her surgery, and take a much needed break. It was so great to hear from you, Jeanne. I will send you an email. :o) Happy Days ((HUGS))

Hello Jeanne,
I hope Andrea will recover soon.
I think what she is doing and from what you share to us, how dedicated she is to her work and patients is just something to be admired of.
I like the concept of the Hospice. It's holistic and especially with families. It's very important to make them feel that they are part of what it is going. At the same time, not only is it patient-oriented only but family -oriented. Families are the direct caregivers and the first ones to ever feel/affected if their love ones are ill.
Happy Pink Saturday!

Li

Jeanne,
As a nurse myself, I admire Andrea so much! I would love to be able to work in Hospice some day but in an inpatient . The traveling is not for me and has it's hazards as you have found out. My Mother passed away in an inpatient Hospice Unit and even though she had 2 daughters that were nurses, it was the best choice for us and she died in the most peaceful , dignified way. She died pain free and in her sleep.
The inpatient unit worked for us because we were able to spend as much time there as we wanted but could go back to our homes which were in a normal state for a bit of reality.
I hope your daughter recovers fully and can go back to the job if she chooses to. Nursing is a very hard profession and takes a physical toll of those of us who do direct Patient care!

Andrea does indeed do a very special job not many could cope with. Having torn my shoulder muscle, and also having had surgery for RSI, I totally empathise. But she has GOT to rest to allow that shoulder time to heal - or she's no good to anyone in her job, and also may have permanent damage. Then she can't help anyone! (maybe that will make her take some time off...)
Thanks so much for visiting and for your birthday wishes - made my day! Sorry for not getting back to you earlier - Himself put his foot down and said No more computer tonight - so I actually had to quit for the evening! Happy Pink Saturday for yesterday, love to you and your daughter.
