Some people might call this fun but I think is is hard work. However, there is an element of fun in having family doing a project together. At least my sister thinks so...
My phone rings, I say hello. It's my sister Carmen asking me, "Whatcha doin...are you busy?" "Not very," I answer." "Want some company," she asks. "Sure," I say. She says, "Do you remember when we were growing up and we sat under the oak tree outside shelling peas with Mom?" "Oh yes, it is a favorite memory of mine." "Great," she says. "I'm coming over with a few boxes of peas that need to be shelled NOW." What I didn't say, is my brother and sister-in-law were going antiquing and I was going too.
This is what followed that phone conversation...
Yep!!! We are shelling peas. Carmen is sitting near my great nephew and my SIL is in the back of the pic. Check out Cheri and Callie the Collie.
My sister's hands and my feet.
My great niece Amber.
My great nephew
My sister-in-law Sharon and Amber. Cheri and Callie liked being with everyone.
There you are, a good old fashioned pea 'pickin and shellin' bit of fun.
Be sure and visit Susan at, A Southern Daydreamer, for lots of great outdoor fun.
Happy Outdoor Wednesday
Love, Jeanne
My grandmother used to gather everyone to sit outside in the shade of the trees to shell peas, too. My cousins, who lived there, hated it. But, I was a city girl, and only visiting, and I thought it was so much fun. I loved gathering with family.
Peas aren't my favorite. I think they are okay, but not great. My husband loves peas.

At least once during the Summer we end up at my MIL's backyard picnic table with peas or lima beans. No warning...just a call or we spot her as we take the dogs out and are reeled in. lol

I missed planting peas this spring, so I just planted some seeds and hope to have a fall crop of peas.
Your pea shelling looks like fun!

What good homey times those pictures bring back!!! We spent many an afternoon and evening shellin' peas, and yours look like a good hearty field pea, though I can't see any which haven't been shelled, so I can't really tell. I cannot shell a long pea from one end to the other without breaking or tearing it somewhere to make it easier.
We stopped at a Farmers' Market in AL on the way back up I-65, and the quarts of shelled field peas in the cooler started at $8.95, so I guess I'll stick to the nice Pict-Sweet bags of Peas N Snaps from the grocery freezer for $1.09.
The picture I found yesterday on the 'Net was Purplehull Crowders---those that cook up fat and round, with the nice brown liquor, and I wanted some SO BAD!!! Hope yours were wonderful!

Remember I was telling you about the pea chucking contest Randy's mom always had with my kids at the cottage? Who ever chucked the most got a prize. They loved that game. Randy LOVES those peas. He eats them raw. Me...well I like mine cooked.
It's a hot and sticky, sunny day today. Great day for the pool. Had a lovely visit with Sister Lolotte yesterday. We drove to the country where she was a one room school teacher for 20 years. Her good friends still live in the same house. They had us for dinner. SOoooo yummy. Sister got home late ; )
Hope your having a great day my dear friend.
Love You to the moon and back again.

It probably sounds crazy, but I used to love to shell peas or beans. Did not care to pick. I still would, but just do not have much need for it anymore. Looks like everyone at your shelling party had fun.

Hello Jeanne,
LOL Well, no antiquing but you did say it was your fave memory. Your sister was just trying to help you relive it :-)And you even got your sister-in-law to not go also and be with you guys.
I haven't tried doing it, but from what I can see, with the right company, it'll definitely be fun :-)

I remember shelling peas with my boys when they were young and we grew a much larger vegetable garden. This year we had a ton of peas but only a very few plants and so it was up to my hubby and me to do it! What a nice way to spend time together as a family!!
