LEAVING GALVESTON, TEXAS
We took a ferry to shorten our trip home and the drive along the Gulf of Mexico was so interesting. The ferry ride was about 15 minutes and there were two ferrys carrying more cars than we could count and even huge semi trucks. The big surprise...It was free.
Taken from our car.
The drive along the Gulf was this close to the water in places. Sometimes it was farther away and we saw houses on stilts all along the Gulf. Imagine if your home was in a hurricane. Do you think the stilts would save your home?
We found these home fascinating.
We even saw oil wells...
We stopped at a place that had a historical marker. The only thing there was a sign and two picnic tables. No trees or nice grass anywhere. I would call it desolate.
It was not very high that we noticed. The Gulf of Mexico was very close by.
We were very happy to get to the mainland after this long drive of not much to see.
Still, it was a part of the USA that we had never seen before so it was worth the ride.
It is so good to be home.
Sally, I gave a big hug to Shelia but your note came to late for me to tell her it was from you. She will know when she reads this post. She was an absolute "Sweetie."
Happy Blue Monday
Love,
JEANNE
Wow, I'm not too fond of heights, don't think I'd like to live there. Using the steps would be a good workout though:@)

Thanks, Jeanne, for delivering my hug to Shelia, even though I was a bit late in asking.
Texas is big enough to be devoid of anything in certain places. Florida has some houses on stilts; it doesn't stop a hurricane, but it prevents flooding.
Happy 1st Blue Monday!

Happy Blue Monday, Jeanne.
The majority of houses along the Carolina close are built off of the ground, too. Many of them have garages on the ground level. The building code for these homes is incredibly stringent.

Seen similar stilt homes on coastal Massachusetts, and I agree with others - I wouldn't want to deal with the stairs, but the view is grand and the homes are safer......

I always think of carrying all the groceries up those stairs every week, and have visions that when they moved in, they took all the furniture up through the windows, like those old movies and cartoons of hauling a piano or a safe up on ropes into a fourth-floor apartment.

Welcome home. Jeanne!
It was interesting to see those stilt homes. i guess they've learned from experience about storm surge flooding. I am sad about the fires in Colorado. My children aren't near any of them but it is sad to see so much destruction of forests, animals and homes. Wish we could send some of the heavy rain we have been getting there!
Hugs,
Pat

Well that looks awful funny to me!!! I can't even imagine climbing those stairs AT ALL!!! Can you imagine grocery shopping, or pets going up and down those stairs?? Not my style, but good for some I guess.
Well, just got home. My cousin left us at 11:00 am this morning. It was very peaceful. Hospice was there this morning, but it was too late. He was surrounded by his family. He will be buried this Friday. One more tearful day ; (
It's turned cold here today, but it won't last. It's like God was having a bad hair day.
I slept in Cornwall last night again. It's good to be home.
Must call Sister... and YES she did get your card. I hadn't seen it, but I will see it soon : )

These beach homes are fabulous. I love the ocean, so serene. We are vacationing in Colorado but are not close to the fires. Happy Blue Mon.

the houses on stilts are beautiful, but i don't think i can live here full-time, especially during hurricane season.:p

Hi Jeanne! Oh you captured some great snaps of leaving Galveston! I'm so glad you liked the ferry! High Island is a birders' paradise in the spring. So many birds come there (it's not too pretty but the birds seem to like it) each spring and birders from all over come with their binoculars and cameras!
Hope you're doing well and have rested up from your trip.
Be a sweetie,
shelia ;)
